Rylan Smith: Georgia native Rylan Smith began his musical studies as a percussionist when he was 9 years old. Two years later he put down his mallets in favor of the guitar. He remained largely self-taught until, at age 17, he met John Sutherland, who immediately offered him a scholarship to come and study at the University of Georgia. In addition to Mr. Sutherland, Rylan has studied with such luminaries as Christopher Parkening, Daniel Wolfe, and David Brandon. He maintains an active performance schedule both as a soloist and in various ensembles. Ever the proponent of new music, Rylan has appeared frequently with the UGA Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, often times giving world and state premiers. He has received many honors including selection into the final recital of the Christopher Parkening Masterclass for four straight years (2002-05), he was a UGA Director's Award of Excellence recipient, and he was awarded first place in the 2004 GMTA Spring Competition. Rylan is also an avid composer and has studied under Adrian P. Childs, William Bolcom, Leonard V. Ball, and Augusta Reed Thomas. |
